Dr. Hays has been a member of the SPA since 2003, and of the SPPM since its formation as a Special Interest Group (SIG) within SPA in 2009. He has presented numerous workshops, refresher courses, ask-the-experts panels, and PBLDs at SPA annual meetings for many years, and has presented in some fashion at every SIG/SPPM annual meeting since they began in 2011. He is a member of the Education Committees of both SPA and SPPM, served as the program co-chair for the SPPM 3rd Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs in 2016, and is the program chair for the SPPM 4th Annual Meeting in Austin in 2017.

SPPM Research Committee Co-Chair:  I am the co-chair of the SPPM research committee.  I have been involved with organizing the research components of the annual meeting of the SPPM; scientific abstract review and selection of posters for the annual meeting; selection of moderators and organization of poster presentations during the annual meeting; development of mechanism for SPPM review and advocacy/support for investigators’ research grant submissions for external grant funding by governmental agencies and foundations

From 2012-2014, I served as a member of the Research Committee of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM).  I was involved with determining the research priorities of this national organization and for advocating for research in the field of pediatric palliative medicine.  From 2014 to the present, I have been a member of the           Quality and Practice Standards Committee of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM); this committee is charged with advocacy for valid clinical metrics of quality palliative care and to interact with governmental agencies for the promotion of quality practice in the field of palliative medicine.  From 2012 to the present, I have been a member of the Scientific Subcommittee for the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM); we are involved in the development of the scientific portion of the annual assembly and in the review and selection of research poster presentation and workshops for this assembly. From 2013 to the present, I am serving as a member of the Abstract Review Subcommittee on Chronic and Cancer Pain for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA); I am involved in the review and selection of scientific abstracts for the annual meeting of the ASA held in October.  Members of this committee also participate as moderators of oral and poster presentations during this meeting.  From 2013 to the present, I have been serving as a member of the Committee on Global Humanitarian Outreach for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA); this committee is tasked with the promotion of international anesthesia activities, especially in resource-constrained environments.  I have also served in a sub-committee that has been involved with the selection of ASA Global Scholars to attend the annual meeting of the ASA and SPA in October.  Last year was our inaugural year of this program, and we have recently selected individuals who will attend the annual meeting of SPA/ASA in Chicago in October 2016.
